Skiathos is a picturesque Greek island located in the northwestern Aegean Sea, with an area of approximately 50 km² (19,3 mi2). It has a permanent population of around 6,000, most of whom live in the capital of the same name. The island has a rich history dating back to ancient times, when it was part of the Athenian Maritime League. Another important monument is the Evangelistria Monastery, where the first Greek flag was raised in 1807. Today, Skiathos is known primarily for its beautiful beaches and clear sea. There are more than 60 beaches, the most famous of which is Koukounaries with its fine sand and pine trees. Tourists are also attracted by hidden coves such as Lalaria, accessible only by boat. The town of Skiathos offers traditional taverns, nightlife and the Papadiamanti writer's museum.
