Kuusamo
Kuusamo is a popular nature and outdoor destination in northeastern Finland, close to the Russian border, with a population of about 15,000 people. Covering 5,809 km² (2,243 sq mi), it is one of Finland's largest municipalities by area. Founded in 1868, Kuusamo developed through forestry, reindeer herding, and tourism, while Ruka Ski Resort, opened in 1957, transformed the region into one of Finland's leading winter destinations. Kuusamo Airport, located about 6 km (3.7 mi) from the town center, provides regular domestic flights, seasonal international connections, and convenient access to the Ruka ski area. The region is surrounded by forests, lakes, rivers, and rolling fells, offering breathtaking scenery throughout the year. Winter visitors enjoy skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, husky and reindeer safaris, ice fishing, and Northern Lights excursions. In summer, Kuusamo attracts hikers, cyclists, canoeists, anglers, and wildlife photographers. Highlights include Oulanka National Park, the famous Karhunkierros Trail, and the spectacular Kiutaköngäs Rapids. Ruka Ski Resort
Ruka Ski Resort is one of Finland's largest and most popular ski resorts, located about 27 km (17 mi) from Kuusamo. The resort has 41 groomed slopes, 22 lifts, and approximately 19 km (12 mi) of ski runs, with terrain for beginners and experienced skiers. The winter season usually starts in early October and continues until early May. Activities include downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, husky and reindeer safaris, and night skiing. Ruka offers excellent facilities, including ski schools, equipment rental, hotels, apartments, restaurants, cafés, shops, snowparks, and convenient ski-in/ski-out accommodation.

Salla Ski Resort
Salla Ski Resort is a peaceful winter destination in Finnish Lapland, surrounded by pristine forests and fells. The resort reaches an elevation of about 480 m (1,575 ft) above sea level and offers 15 slopes and 6 lifts, with approximately 10 km (6.2 mi) of ski runs and a vertical drop of about 230 m (755 ft). The ski season usually begins in November and continues until early May, supported by reliable snow conditions and snowmaking. Activities include downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fat biking, and winter safaris. Facilities include ski schools, equipment rentals, restaurants, cafés, accommodation, parking, children's areas, and services close to the slopes.

Oulanka National Park
Oulanka National Park is one of Finland's most spectacular protected areas, covering 290 km² (112 sq mi) near Kuusamo. Established in 1956, the park is famous for its wild rivers, rapids, waterfalls, deep gorges, pine forests, and rich wildlife. Its unique landscape combines northern, eastern, and southern plant species. The park's most famous hiking route is the 82-km (51-mi) Karhunkierros Trail, while the shorter 12-km (7.5-mi) Pieni Karhunkierros is ideal for day trips. Popular activities include hiking, canoeing, rafting, fishing, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, wildlife watching, and nature photography. Oulanka Visitor Centre provides trail information, maps, exhibitions, parking, and visitor services. Overnight options include designated campsites, lean-to shelters, wilderness huts, rental cabins, and accommodation around nearby Ruka and Kuusamo.
