Berlin is located in northeastern Germany. It is the capital of this country. Berlin is the largest city in Germany and the European Union. The population is over 3.6 million inhabitants. Around 5 million people live in the metropolitan area. The area is 892 square km. The city was probably founded in the 12th century. In 1417 it became the capital of Brandenburg, which today is a federal state of Germany. In 1701, Berlin became the capital of the new Kingdom of Prussia. In this age the dynamic rise of the city begins. In 1871, the German Empire was established and Berlin was the capital with the population over 1 million. After World War II, the city was divided into East Berlin and West Berlin.East Berlin was the capital of East Germany. West Berlin was the largest city of West Germany, but not the capital (Capital was Bonn).
